Chapter 3: The Trial

Chapter 3: The Trial
Eight months later, the courtroom was packed.
Reporters filled every available seat.
Adrian sat at the defense table looking nothing like the confident businessman he had once been.
The prosecution presented weeks of evidence.
Financial fraud.
Money laundering.
Tax evasion.
Domestic abuse.
Witness after witness described the fear that had ruled the company and the mansion alike.
Former employees admitted they had stayed silent because they feared losing everything.
One housekeeper testified through tears that she had secretly left medical supplies outside my bedroom after hearing me cry at night.
Then it was my turn.
I walked to the witness stand.
The courtroom became completely still.
The prosecutor asked only one question.
"When did you realize your marriage was over?"
I thought carefully before answering.
"Not when he hit me."
"Not when he humiliated me."
"It ended the day I realized he no longer saw me as a person."
Adrian couldn't look at me.
After six weeks of testimony, the jury deliberated for less than four hours.
Guilty.
On every major count.
Vanessa was convicted as well for conspiracy, financial crimes, and obstruction of justice.
