Chapter 4: Learning to Live Again

Chapter 4: Learning to Live Again

Justice did not erase my scars.

The marks on my back slowly faded, but healing required much more than time.

I spent months in therapy.

I learned that surviving wasn't the same as living.

With my father's encouragement, I founded the Ashford Hope Foundation, providing legal assistance, emergency housing, and financial support for survivors of domestic abuse.

Every person who walked through our doors reminded me of the woman I used to be.

Frightened.

Silent.

Convinced she had nowhere to go.

One afternoon, a young woman hesitated outside my office.

"I don't think anyone will believe me," she whispered.

I smiled gently.

"I believe you."

Those three words made her cry.

They were the same words I had needed to hear years earlier.

My father's health began slowing him down, but every Friday we still shared lunch together.

He often smiled and said, "You don't need my shield anymore."

May you like

He was right.

For the first time in my life, I had become my own.
