Chapter 2 - A Mother Never ForgetsMariana drove straight to the Children's Hospital in southern Mexico City.

Mateo never stopped trembling.

He crouched in the back seat instead of sitting, pressing himself into the corner like a frightened animal. Every sudden sound made him flinch. When Mariana tried to touch his shoulder, he instinctively covered his head with both arms.

The doctors immediately realized something was terribly wrong.

Within minutes, a pediatric trauma specialist, a psychologist, and two nurses surrounded the little boy.

After nearly two hours of examinations, the chief physician finally returned.

His expression was grim.

"Mrs. Rivera..."

Mariana stood immediately.

"Your son has suffered prolonged physical abuse, severe malnutrition, and extreme emotional neglect."

She felt the room spin.

"There are old fractures that healed without treatment."

"He has scars from repeated restraints."

"And..."

The doctor paused.

"He no longer responds to affection normally because he has learned that human contact usually brings pain."

Mariana covered her mouth.

Tears streamed silently down her face.

The psychologist placed a folder before her.

"These injuries didn't happen over weeks."

"They happened over years."

Mariana closed her eyes.

Five years.

While she believed her husband was raising their son with love...

Her little boy had been surviving a nightmare.

That evening, Detective Isabel Cruz visited the hospital.

Several neighbors had already contacted Child Protective Services after witnessing Mariana remove the chain from Mateo's neck.

One elderly neighbor handed police dozens of photographs taken secretly over the previous three years.

Every picture showed the same horror.

Mateo eating beside the family dog.

Sleeping inside the filthy doghouse.

Wearing the same torn clothes for months.

Bruises.

Cuts.

Burn marks.

While inside the house...

Ricardo, Brenda, Doña Elvira, and the baby celebrated birthdays, holidays, and family dinners.

The evidence was overwhelming.

Judge Elena Vargas signed emergency warrants before sunrise.

At exactly 6:15 a.m., police vehicles surrounded the Coyoacán property.

Ricardo opened the front door wearing expensive pajamas.

"What is this?"

The lead detective showed the warrant.

"You are under arrest for child abuse, criminal neglect, fraud, and conspiracy."

Doña Elvira screamed.

"This is ridiculous!"

"We fed him!"

"You chained a five-year-old child like an animal," the detective replied coldly.

Brenda tried slipping out the back door carrying jewelry and cash.

She didn't make it past the garden.

Another officer stopped her.

"Where are you going?"

She froze.

Inside the nursery, investigators made another discovery.

The baby's birth certificate.

The father section was blank.

Ricardo stared at it in disbelief.

He slowly looked toward Brenda.

"You told me..."

Brenda couldn't answer.

DNA testing was ordered immediately.

Three days later, the results arrived.

Ricardo was not the baby's father.

The woman he'd destroyed his family for had been lying from the beginning.
