The courtroom was full again.

But this time, Mariana wasn't there as a victim.

She had been invited to testify before lawmakers considering stronger child protection legislation.

She spoke calmly.

"My son wasn't invisible."

"Many people saw his suffering."

"They simply convinced themselves it wasn't their responsibility."

Silence filled the chamber.

Then she added,

"The greatest danger isn't cruelty."

"It's indifference."

Her testimony helped inspire new reporting procedures, stronger penalties for child abuse, and expanded support for vulnerable children.

When she finished speaking, the room rose in applause.
