Chapter 7 - The Battlefield of Hope

With the traitor removed and Sophia's medication restored to its full potency by Emma's strict oversight, a miracle began to unfold within the fortress.
Sophia’s appetite returned. The severe chills that had plagued her nights began to recede. Every evening, Lorenzo sat at the edge of her canopy bed, holding her hand while Emma sang the old Neapolitan songs, transforming the sterile medical sanctuary into a room filled with warmth, laughter, and memory.
But the war outside was escalating.
Matteo Moretti, desperate after Vincent's capture, ordered a full-scale blockade on the Pellegrini shipping routes. Lorenzo’s captains were demanding retaliation, their blood-soaked lifestyle threatening to spill onto the peaceful sanctuary Emma had built for the child.
"You can't go to that meeting tonight, Lorenzo," Emma said, stopping him in the grand hallway as he adjusted his charcoal coat. "The Morettis are baiting you. They want you away from the house."
"I have to go, Emma," Lorenzo said, looking at her with an intensity that had shifted from suspicion to a deep, profound reliance. "If I don't secure the borders tonight, they will bring the fight to this doorstep. Watch over Sophia. Marcus has twenty men perimetered outside. You are safe here."

"I don't care about myself, Lorenzo," Emma said, reaching out to touch his lapel, her fingers brushing against the silver medallion she had returned to him. "Just come back to her. She just found her voice. Don't make her lose it again."
Lorenzo looked at her for a long, silent moment. He reached up, his rough hand gently cradling her cheek with a tenderness he hadn't felt in four years. "I'll come back. For both of you."
