Chapter 1 - The Pillow and the Lie

The sharp smack echoed through the pristine living room.

"You tried to kill my unborn baby!" Vanessa screamed, clutching her stomach and slapping her teenage daughter across the face.

Seventeen-year-old Chloe stumbled back, her cheek burning red. But she didn't cry. Instead, she reached forward with cold, deliberate speed, grabbed the hem of her mother’s maternity shirt, and yanked.

A throw pillow tumbled out, bouncing uselessly onto the hardwood floor.

Silence descended upon the room like a heavy anvil.

Vanessa froze, backing away rapidly, her hands flying to her stomach. "No... Dad, listen to me—"

Mark, her husband, stared at the pillow on the floor. His face drained of all color as he looked up at his wife as if staring at a total stranger. "You made me believe... you made me believe we were having another child."

Tears welled in Vanessa’s eyes. "I was terrified!"

"Terrified?" Chloe snapped, her hands trembling with months of pent-up rage. "You called me a jealous brat! You let Dad hate me for months! Every single dinner, every argument, he defended you and accused me of trying to ruin this family!"

Mark looked at his daughter, a wave of profound shame washing over him. She was right. He had scolded her, grounded her, and distance himself from her—all to protect a lie.

"I just wanted us to stay together," Vanessa sobbed, reaching for Mark's arm. "I thought... I thought if you believed I was pregnant, you wouldn't file for divorce!"

"You used a fake baby to trap me," Mark whispered, recoiling from her touch. "Because you were already cheating on me, weren't you?"

Mark pointed a trembling finger toward the front door. "Pack your things. We're done."

Vanessa looked around frantically, hoping for a shred of mercy. Neither her husband nor her daughter gave her an inch.

"One more thing," Chloe said softly, raising her smartphone. "The man you cheated on him with? He’s standing outside right now."

Three slow, heavy knocks echoed against the front door.
