Chapter 2 - Eighteen Years of Shadows

Vanessa stopped breathing. "No..." she whispered. "Chloe, don't do this."

Chloe walked to the foyer and pulled the heavy oak door open.

A man stood on the porch. Tall, in his late fifties, wearing a dark trench coat over a pale, exhausted face. He looked like someone who had been running from his own conscience for far too long.

Mark recognized him instantly. "Daniel?"

Daniel swallowed hard, stepping into the entry. "I'm sorry, Mark. I can't keep carrying this."

Vanessa stepped forward, her voice sharp with panic. "Get out! Get out of my house!"

Mark’s eyes darted between his wife and his former best friend. "What is going on here?"

"Tell him," Chloe demanded, her arms crossed tight.

Daniel lowered his head. "Eighteen years ago... Vanessa and I had an affair."

The air left Mark's lungs in a violent rush. Eighteen years. He stumbled back, his mind racing backward in time, connecting dots he had ignored for almost two decades.

"Eighteen years?" Mark looked at Chloe. Then at Vanessa. A sickening realization began to take shape in his chest. "No... tell me no."

Daniel closed his eyes. "Chloe reached out to me two months ago. She took a DNA test."

Mark felt the ground collapse beneath his feet. He looked at his daughter, his voice breaking into a whisper. "What did the test say?"

No one answered. The silence was louder than a gunshot.

"She’s my biological daughter, Mark," Daniel confessed softly. "I'm sorry."
