Chapter 4 - The Shadow in the Mailbox

Six months later.

The divorce was finalized. Vanessa had vanished, leaving the city entirely. Daniel returned to his own life, making no attempt to intrude on Mark and Chloe’s bond. Chloe kept Mark's last name—not out of obligation, but out of pride.

One evening, Mark and Chloe sat on the back patio, enjoying a quiet dinner under the warm summer sky.

"Do you ever wonder," Mark asked gently, setting down his glass, "what your life would have been like if you grew up with Daniel?"

Chloe smiled, squeezing her father’s hand. "Not for a second. The man who raised me was never the wrong one."

Mark smiled, feeling the last broken pieces of his heart finally heal.

Suddenly, the front gate chimed. The mail carrier dropped a thick, unaddressed manila envelope into the box by the porch and drove away.

Chloe stood up. "I'll grab it."

She walked to the gate and pulled out the heavy envelope. There was no stamp, no return address—just her name written in dark, elegant cursive.

Inside was an old leather-bound journal and a USB drive.

Curious, Chloe plugged the flash drive into her phone. A single audio file popped up, recorded over eighteen years ago. She pressed play and held the speaker to her ear.

A younger Vanessa’s voice filled the speaker, whispering frantically:

"Daniel, Mark is getting suspicious! We need to make sure he never finds out about the baby!"

Then came a man's voice—cold, calculating, and unmistakably distinct.

Except... it wasn't Daniel's voice.

It was Mark’s older brother, Julian—who had tragically died in a car accident the very week Chloe was born.
