part 5

PART 5
Ethan stopped breathing.
Nora did not move.
On the screen, Madeline sat in the nursery at night.
Her hair was messy.
Her eyes were swollen.
The baby slept in the crib behind her.
She held the camera close and whispered like someone was listening outside the door.
“Ethan, I tried to reach command.”
“Your mother blocked the calls.”
“She told everyone I was unstable.”
“She took my phone twice.”
“She says the baby belongs to the Vance family, not to me.”
Ethan’s hand closed around the back of the chair.
The video flickered.
Madeline looked toward the door.
Then back.
“Julian has been asking me to sign trust papers.”
“He says it’s just estate protection while you’re deployed.”
“It isn’t.”
“I read enough to know they’re trying to move guardianship and money.”
Nora paused the video.
“Guardianship?”
Ethan’s voice was barely audible.
“My deployment life insurance.”
“My military benefits.”
“My family trust.”
“My son.”
Nora resumed the file.
Madeline wiped her face.
“I heard Eleanor tell Julian that if I don’t cooperate, they’ll prove I’m unfit.”
“She said postpartum women are easy to discredit.”
Ethan’s eyes burned.
Then the video audio caught another voice.
Eleanor.
Muffled through the door.
“Madeline, open this door.”
Madeline whispered faster.
“I hid copies in the nursery vent.”
“If something happens, check the blue elephant toy.”
“And Ethan…”
Her face crumpled.
“Believe me first.”
The video ended.
Ethan stood in silence.
Nora saved the file to evidence.
“There are more.”
The second video showed Julian entering the nursery.
He spoke softly.
Too softly.
“Madeline, sign the papers.”
“You’re tired.”
“You’re not thinking clearly.”
Madeline’s voice answered from behind the camera.
“I am not giving your mother control of my son.”
Julian’s face changed.
The charm vanished.
“You think you can fight Eleanor Vance while Ethan is gone?”
“You are alone in this house.”
The file ended.
Ethan turned toward the library door.
His mother and brother stood outside.
They had heard enough to know the card worked.
Julian whispered, “Ethan, let me explain.”
Ethan stepped toward him.
“No.”
May you like
“You will explain to Detective Hale.”
