Soft

PART 6

The blue elephant toy was still in the nursery.

Eleanor tried to stop them from searching it.

That was her third mistake.

She followed Ethan, Nora, and two officers up the staircase, saying the same words in different forms.

This is private.

This is grief.

This is family.

This is not necessary.

Ethan did not answer.

He handed the baby to Clara, the nanny, only after Nora made sure an officer stayed beside her.

Then he crossed to the crib.

The blue elephant sat near the pillow.

Soft.

Small.

Innocent.

His hands shook as he picked it up.

There was a seam along the back.

Carefully reopened.

Carefully restitched.

Inside was a folded plastic sleeve.

Documents.

Photographs.

A handwritten note.

Nora took them one by one.

A copy of a petition for temporary guardianship.

Not filed yet.

Signed by Eleanor.

Prepared by Julian’s attorney.

A medical statement claiming Madeline suffered postpartum delusions.

Signed by the private physician.

A draft trust amendment naming Eleanor as emergency trustee if Ethan died or became unavailable.

A life insurance beneficiary change form.

Unsigned.

Madeline had circled the signature line and written one word.

No.

Ethan’s vision blurred.

Then Nora found the photographs.

Bruises on Madeline’s arm.

A red mark near her throat.

A broken nursery lamp.

A smashed phone.

Clara, the nanny, began crying.

Nora turned to her gently.

“Clara.”

“Now.”

The young woman looked at Eleanor.

Eleanor’s face was ice.

Ethan stepped between them.

“Look at me.”

Clara did.

“What happened to my wife?”

Clara’s lips trembled.

“Mrs. Vance tried to leave the night before she died.”

“Your mother told security not to open the gate.”

“Mr. Julian took the baby from her arms.”

Ethan closed his eyes.

Clara continued, crying harder.

“Madeline screamed for him back.”

“Then she fell.”

Julian shouted from the doorway.

“She tripped.”

Clara flinched.

Nora turned to Julian.

“You just admitted you were there.”

The room went silent.

Julian realized too late what he had done.
