Madeline’s body was not buried that day.
Eleanor fought it.
Of course she did.
She said it was monstrous.
Disrespectful.
A desecration.
Ethan looked at his mother standing beside the coffin and felt something inside him go numb.
“You lost the right to speak for her.”
Nora obtained the emergency order for an autopsy within two hours.
The private physician who signed the postpartum complication report suddenly became unreachable.
That told Nora enough.
By midnight, the medical examiner had taken custody.
By morning, the first findings came back.
The death was not consistent with natural postpartum collapse.
There was trauma.
A head injury.
Evidence of restraint.
Possible suffocation could not yet be ruled out.
Ethan listened in Nora’s office with his son asleep in a carrier beside his chair.
He did not cry.
Not then.
The grief had moved somewhere deeper.
Somewhere quieter.
Somewhere dangerous.
Nora asked, “Can you tell me about your family finances?”
Ethan almost laughed.
“That is why they did it.”
He explained the trust.
His father had left a defense contracting fortune.
Ethan had never cared much for it.
Eleanor did.
Julian did even more.
When Ethan joined the Army instead of entering the family company, Eleanor called it noble in public and foolish in private.
After Madeline became pregnant, the trust terms changed automatically.
Ethan’s direct heir would control certain family assets if Ethan died.
If Madeline remained guardian, Eleanor’s influence would shrink.
If Madeline was declared unstable, Eleanor could petition for control.
If Ethan stayed deployed long enough, Julian could move faster.
Nora wrote everything down.
Then she asked, “Why kill her before she signed?”
Ethan looked at his sleeping son.
“Because she refused.”
“And because she found proof.”
At noon, Clara gave a full statement.
She said Eleanor had restricted Madeline’s visitors.
Julian had taken her phone.
The physician had sedated her twice without clear explanation.
The night Madeline died, Clara heard shouting near the staircase.
Madeline screaming, “Give me my baby.”
Julian saying, “You’re not leaving with him.”
Then a crash.
Then silence.
Eleanor arrived minutes later and told Clara if she wanted to stay in America, she would forget what she heard.
Ethan closed his eyes when Nora read that part.
