Chapter 2 - Shadows in the Ice

The words sent a paralyzing shock down my spine. This wasn't a tragic hide-and-seek accident. It was systematic, sadistic abuse masquerading as discipline. I carried Lily directly to my truck, blasting the heater on full and wrapping her in an emergency thermal blanket from under the back seat.

“Stay here, baby. Lock the doors,” I instructed softly, kissing her freezing forehead before running back inside the house to find answers. My blood was boiling, every protective fatherly instinct screaming for blood.

I pushed through the garage entry door into the quiet house. The kitchen was spotlessly clean, illuminated only by the warm light of the side lamp. I expected Evelyn to be sitting calmly with a cup of tea, but the main floor was completely deserted. Then I heard heavy footsteps upstairs, followed by the metallic click of a lock.

I rushed up the stairs, taking them three at a time. I found Evelyn standing in the hallway outside Taylor’s master bedroom, holding a sleek leather briefcase and several thick manila folders. She didn't look startled to see me; her expression was chillingly composed, her gray hair pinned up flawlessly.

“Mark,” Evelyn said, her voice smooth and devoid of emotion. “You weren't supposed to be here until tomorrow.”

“You locked Lily in a freezer!” I roared, stepping toward her. “Are you out of your insane mind? She could have died!”

Evelyn didn't even flinch. She adjusted her reading glasses and let out a soft, tired sigh. “Don't be dramatic, Mark. The unit was set to low, and she was only in there for ten minutes. Discipline requires clarity. Children today are soft, unguided. Taylor was raised with strict boundaries, and look how successful she turned out.”

“That is torture!” I yelled, grabbing my phone to call the police. “You’re going to prison, Evelyn. I swear to God, you’ll spend the rest of your life in a cell.”

Before I could press dial, Evelyn held up a single paper from her folder. Her calm smile curdled into something far darker, something menacing.

“Go ahead, call them. But before the deputies arrive, perhaps you should ask yourself why Taylor agreed to divorce you so suddenly, and where all the money in your joint college fund for Lily actually went.”
