Chapter 3 - The Ledger of Lies

I hesitated, my thumb hovering over the emergency call button. “What are you talking about?”
Evelyn stepped closer, handing me the document. It was a medical transcript alongside bank transfer receipts spanning over four years. My eyes scanned the lines, struggling to process the technical jargon and financial figures. The documents revealed massive wire transfers—totaling over $200,000—from our family account to an offshore clinical research facility in Panama.
“Taylor isn't at the grocery store, Mark,” Evelyn whispered softly, as if sharing a gentle secret. “She’s at a private psychiatric intake center in Denver. She has been suffering from early-onset familial schizophrenia for two years. The same illness that killed her elder sister.”
The floor felt as though it had dropped out beneath me. “No... Taylor was just stressed. She said she lost love for me. She wanted space...”
“She pushed you away because I advised her to,” Evelyn said coolly. “To protect you and Lily from the truth of her mental degradation. I managed everything. I arranged the financial transfers for her experimental treatments. And I took full legal guardianship of Lily’s daily routine.”
“By stuffing her in a freezer?!” I shouted, the rage rushing back with terrifying force.

“Lily exhibits the early neurological precursors of the same condition,” Evelyn said without a hint of remorse. “Hyper-reactivity, sensory overload, emotional outbursts. Cryo-shock therapy is an emerging, highly effective method to reset the amygdala. I am saving your daughter from her mother’s fate, Mark. Something your fragile morality would never have the strength to do.”
I realized then that Evelyn wasn't just a controlling mother-in-law. She was a deeply delusioned sociopath who had systematically isolated my wife, drained our life savings under the guise of fake medical cures, and was now torturing my daughter in the name of twisted pseudo-science.
