I snatched the folder out of Evelyn’s hand and backed away toward the staircase. “You’re a monster. I’m taking Lily, and I’m taking these documents directly to the District Attorney.”

For the first time, Evelyn’s calm facade cracked. Her eyes narrowed into slits of pure venom.

“If you step out that door with those papers, Mark, you will ruin everything. I have power of attorney. I have medical evaluations signed by certified doctors stating that you were abusive, that you drove Taylor to her breakdown. Who do you think the court will believe? An unemployed, emotionally unstable ex-husband, or a respected benefactor of the community?”

I didn't answer. I turned and sprinted down the stairs. As I reached the front door, I heard Evelyn making a rapid phone call behind me, her voice shrill: “Yes, emergency services? My daughter’s abusive ex-husband has broken into the house and abducted my granddaughter!”

I burst into the freezing night air, ran to my truck, and jumped into the driver's seat. Lily was huddled under the thermal blanket, her blue lips slowly regaining a flush of warm pink. She looked up at me with wide, terrified eyes.

“Is Grandma coming?” she whimpered.

“No, sweetheart. Nobody is ever going to hurt you again,” I said, locking the doors and shifting the truck into drive. Tires screaming against the icy gravel, I sped away from Aspen Ridge Lane as police sirens began to wail in the far distance.
