Chapter 10 - Finish What Matters

Six weeks later, I stood in the backyard of my newly renovated home.

The dirt hole near the porch had been filled, smoothed, and planted over with vibrant hydrangeas and lavender. The porch steps were freshly painted white, and a wooden swing hung from the maple tree.

Rachel and Evelyn were on the back patio setting up a crib and outdoor chairs. Sunlight filtered through the green leaves, casting golden patterns across the grass.

I walked over to the edge of the garden and sat on the new wooden bench. I pulled Mom’s crossword book from my tote bag and opened the front cover.

Finish what matters.

I picked up a pen and, beneath her handwriting, wrote three words of my own:

May you like

We finally did.

A soft breeze rustled the hydrangeas. I closed the book, leaned back against the bench, and listened to the peaceful sounds of my sister’s laughter and the quiet rustle of the leaves—unafraid, unbroken, and finally home.
