Chapter 6 - Lemon Icebox Pie

Knowing that Daniel had actively intercepted mail and forged my reality gave me a cold, unwavering clarity. I was not losing my mind; I was being targeted.

Rachel and I spent the evening searching Mom’s recipe box again. Rachel removed the recipe cards one by one until she stopped at a card labeled LEMON ICEBOX PIE.

On the back, written in Mom’s precise hand, was a date, a bank name, and a four-digit number.

We passed the information to Investigator Ruiz. Ten minutes later, Ruiz called back: "The numbers match a historical branch code and a safe-deposit box format from a bank that merged years ago. Box 4187."

The next morning, Ruiz, Rachel, Evelyn, and I walked into the bank. A branch manager checked the archival ledgers, then looked up with a solemn expression.

"Box 4187 was closed four years ago," the manager said. "Three weeks after Anne Bennett died."

"Who closed it?" I asked.

The manager turned the ledger toward us. The signature in faded blue ink belonged to my mother's oldest friend: Judith Lane.

And beneath her signature: Released per Anne Bennett letter.

Four days later, Rachel and I sat in Judith Lane’s living room. Judith was seventy-two, with soft hands and tea-stained porcelain cups that rattled against her saucer as she set them down.

"Anne gave me the key two months before she entered the hospice," Judith said quietly. "She told me that if she passed, I was to retrieve the box contents and hold them until you, Claire, were settled, married, or in need of the truth."

Judith walked to her hallway closet, pulled out a fireproof steel box, and set it on the coffee table. Inside were three items: a recorded cassette tape, a second cream-colored folder, and a sealed letter addressed to me.

"Why didn't you give this to me when I married Daniel?" I asked.

"Because Anne’s letter explicitly said: 'Do not open or transfer until Claire asks about the north parcel or comes to you herself.' She wanted you to live your life without the shadow of the past unless the past forced its way back in."

I broke the seal on my mother's letter.

My dearest Claire, If you are reading this, it means Daniel or his family has tried to claim what does not belong to them. When you met Daniel, I prayed he was different from Robert. But I knew the law, and I knew how greed travels in bloodlines. The cream folder contains the original recorded deed restriction on your house, witnessed by Thomas Vale. But the cassette tape contains something else: Robert Hart’s recorded confession from thirty years ago regarding the land trust fraud.

I looked at Rachel, then at Evelyn.

"Robert confessed?" Evelyn gasped.

"He did," Judith confirmed. "Your mother kept the recording as leverage to ensure Robert never touched your inheritance, Evelyn. And she left it to Claire so Daniel could never pressure her."
