Chapter 8 - The North Parcel

With the legal battles behind us, Evelyn, Rachel, and I drove out to the north parcel—the eight acres of land that had driven Daniel's family to ruin.

It was a quiet stretch of meadow bordered by ancient oak trees and a winding creek. The grass blew gently in the afternoon breeze.

"Robert wanted to sell this to a commercial developer," Evelyn said, looking across the field. "He saw it as cash. My parents saw it as a sanctuary."

"What will you do with it now?" Rachel asked.

Evelyn turned to me. "I want to place it into a permanent conservation trust in your mother’s name. The Anne Bennett Nature Preserve."

Tears touched my eyes. "Mom would have loved that. She always said trees were the only things that stayed honest."

We walked down to the creek. For the first time in a year, the air felt light. The weight of hidden folders, gaslighting, and unspoken fears had finally lifted.

Rachel put her arm around my shoulders. "So, what’s next for the house?"

"I’m renovating," I smiled. "I’m putting in new windows, painting the kitchen yellow, and building a nursery."

"No cream-colored folders allowed?" Rachel teased.

"Only recipe cards," I laughed.
