Chapter 4 - Justice and Retribution

The force of the explosion sent shrapnel and wooden splinters flying through the air, forcing Daniel and Victoria to dive into the dirt for cover. Screeching metal echoed across the valley as the engineer slammed on the emergency brakes, slowly bringing the massive train to a halt.
Down in the ditch, Rosa lay curled over Elena, acting as a human shield.
"Are you alright?" Rosa gasped, breathless.
Elena placed a trembling hand over her stomach. A moment passed—then a sharp, strong kick struck her palm.
"He’s alive," Elena wept. "He’s still alive."
Daniel came scrambling down the gravel embankment, his face pale as a sheet when he saw them breathing. "Elena... baby, I can explain! My mother forced me into this!"
Victoria rushed down behind him, shrill and frantic. "She’s confused! She drove onto the tracks drunk! We tried to stop her!"
But it was too late. The train conductor and several crew members were already leaping down from the cab, pointing angrily at Daniel. "We saw the whole thing! You blocked that car on purpose!"
Rosa reached into her apron pocket and pulled out a small digital voice recorder—one she had synced to the estate's security system before running out the door. She hit play.
Daniel’s own cold voice echoed clearly over the hiss of the train engine: “Now both of them die.”
Within minutes, police cruisers and ambulances flooded the scene. Mother and son were handcuffed on the spot as traffic cameras at the rail crossing provided crystal-clear video evidence of attempted murder.
Elena was rushed to the emergency room, where doctors performed an immediate C-section. Though born premature, her baby boy took his first strong breath and cried out. Rosa never left their side.
"His name is Leo," Elena sobbed, holding her son against her chest. "Because he was a fighter before he was even born."

At the trial, Victoria and Daniel were convicted on multiple counts of attempted murder and conspiracy, receiving maximum sentences without the possibility of parole. The true will was validated in court, placing the entirety of the family estate into a trust for baby Leo.
Elena used a portion of the fortune to build a sanctuary for women and children escaping domestic abuse—and officially named Rosa as Leo’s godmother.
