Chapter 5 - Shadows in the Distance

Five years later.
Elena and Rosa stood at the old railway crossing, where local authorities had installed a small commemorative garden to honor the rescue. Little Leo was playing near the oak trees, giggling as a slow cargo train rumbled past in the distance.
"Whenever I hear that whistle, I still remember the headlights filling the glass," Elena admitted softly.
Rosa smiled warmly, squeezing her hand. "As long as you’re breathing, child, there’s always a way out."
Elena looked at the tracks, then back at her son. Victoria and Daniel had tried to destroy them with ruthless force, but loyalty and a mother’s love had proven indestructible.
Her phone rang, shattering the peaceful afternoon.
It was the family’s lead estate attorney. His voice on the line was tight, panicked.
"Elena, you need to listen to me very carefully," the lawyer whispered.
Elena froze. "What’s wrong?"
"Daniel has been receiving visitors in state prison for the past three months," the lawyer reported. "Not legal counsel. Someone has been funneling massive wire transfers out of an offshore account in your late father-in-law's name... an account that was never listed in the estate audit."
Elena felt the air leave her lungs. "What are you saying?"
"The account was liquidated last week," the lawyer continued, his voice trembling. "Someone pulled strings with the parole board to transfer Victoria to a private medical facility under the guise of terminal illness. And this morning... Victoria vanished. She escaped."
Elena’s heart pounded against her ribs as she looked over at Leo. "Did she leave anything behind?"
"A signed card left on her hospital bed," the lawyer said grimly. "It reads: 'The train only missed its first stop. The real inheritance was never in the will.'"
Elena slowly lowered the phone, her eyes locking onto the dark horizon where the train disappeared into the trees.

It was only the beginning.
