Chapter 10 - The Family Agreement

On Sunday, Thomas Bennett arrived in an old green pickup truck. He had my mother's walk and her gentle demeanor. When he saw the restored wheelbarrow in Henry's workshop, he ran his fingers along its rusted edge and smiled through tears—revealing that his father had bought that exact wheelbarrow secondhand when Claire was thirteen.

Sitting on the porch, we opened my mother's final sealed letter together.

Inside was an apology to Thomas, a loving note to me, and a copy of a legal beneficiary document for a financial trust administered in Millstone under the names of Annie, Samuel, and Rose.

Mom had written at the bottom: This is not about money. Ask Margaret what Daniel placed in the trust. She knows where the original records are.

When I called Margaret the next morning, she explained softly: "Daniel didn't create that trust to leave money, Annie. He created it to preserve records—letters, photographs, and a document Claire called the family agreement."

Margaret promised to bring the original records the very next day.

Looking out the window, I watched Thomas, Henry, Samuel, and Rose laughing together near the treehouse. My mother's hidden past was no longer a dark secret; it was an open door to a larger, loving family. We were ready to step through it together.
