Chapter 5 - Twenty-Three Returned LettersThree weeks after my eighteenth birthday, a plain white envelope arrived with no return address. Inside was a letter from Margaret Mercer:

Dear Annie,
My name is Margaret Mercer. I believe you may know my brother’s name: Daniel Mercer. If your mother was Claire Bennett, there are things I think you deserve to know...
I called the number included in the letter. Margaret answered, her voice tender. When I asked if Daniel was alive, she replied softly, "No. He passed away ten years ago."
I sat down, realizing he had lived for eight years after I was born.
When I asked why he had never come for me, Margaret began to cry. "He tried, Annie. Daniel knew Claire was pregnant and wrote to her constantly. Then the letters stopped. He went looking for her, but she had moved."
She revealed that when I was almost three, my mother had sent Daniel a single photograph of me with one line written on the back: She asks about you. I don’t know what to tell her.

Daniel wrote back immediately, but his letters were returned—unopened—because my mother kept changing addresses. Margaret had kept every single one of them: twenty-three returned letters.
Before he died, Daniel had begged his sister: "Don’t let Annie grow up thinking I forgot her."
