Chapter 7 - The Secret in the Millstone Bank

Three weeks later, Margaret and I stood inside the quiet bank room in Millstone. I inserted the brass key, and the metal container slid open.

Inside were old documents, photographs, a narrow red notebook belonging to my mother, and a sealed envelope. Written across the front in my mother's handwriting were five words:

For Annie, when she is ready.

Underneath my name was a second name I had never heard before: Thomas Bennett.

Margaret went pale. "Annie... Thomas Bennett was your mother’s brother."

"My mother didn’t have a brother," I said.

"That’s what Claire wanted everyone to believe," Margaret whispered.

We carried the contents back to the Calders' farmhouse, determined to read my mother's final truth together in the warmth of our home.
