Chapter 9 - A Letter from Cedar Hollow

Twelve days later, Thomas's reply arrived:

Dear Annie,

I have written this letter in my head for eighteen years... Yes, I want to hear from you. I knew you survived from an old newspaper clipping, but I stayed away because I was told you were adopted and I didn't want to arrive carrying demands.

He added that six weeks before her death, my mother had called him from a public phone, asking: "If my children ever needed a home, would you take all three?"

A week later, she had mailed him a photograph of us and a sealed letter with strict instructions: "Do not open unless Annie comes looking for you."

Thomas concluded: If you are ready, Annie, I think this letter belongs to you now.

Three days later, I called Thomas, hearing his voice for the first time. We laughed, cried, and talked about my mother’s youth. I invited him to visit us the coming Sunday—and asked him to bring Mom's unopened letter.
