Chapter 1 - The Ocean’s Trap

“Hold on tighter, honey.”

Victoria Hayes’s voice cut through the roar of the twin-engine watercraft, dripping with a venomous, triumphant amusement.

The tow rope jerked violently. Pain ripped through my lower abdomen as my nine-month pregnant stomach slammed against the steering column of the jet ski. I screamed until my throat tore, the sound swallowed instantly by the crashing waves of the Cabo bay.

Then I felt it—a warm, horrifying liquid soaking through my linen shorts.

Blood.

With shaking, freezing fingers, I tore my right hand away from the wet handlebar and pressed the matte-black titanium button hidden flush against the bezel of my tactical watch. It was a custom-built military satellite beacon my father had given me the day I married Julian—a device designed to summon extraction teams behind enemy lines.

“Dad...” I whispered into the howling wind, my vision blurring into a haze of white and red.

“Genevieve? What happened?” Admiral Hector Sterling’s voice came through the encrypted earpiece instantly, steady, crisp, and charged with absolute, lethal authority.

“They’re trying to kill us,” I choked out, a wave of nausea crashing over me as another contraction tore through my body.

“Hold your position, daughter,” my father commanded, his voice dropping into a combat register. “The perimeter is active. Extraction is inbound.”

Seconds later, the sky above the luxury resort exploded with the deafening thunder of heavy military rotors.

Two matte-black Coast Guard interceptors burst around the headland, their heavy machine guns tracking the watercraft, while an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter dropped out of the clouds, kicking up a blinding wall of spray across the bay.

Victoria froze on her jet ski. The arrogant smile vanished from her face as she looked up into the barrel of a Coast Guard deck gun.

On the distant private dock, Julian Vance dropped his glass of scotch. It shattered against the teakwood planks as he stared in absolute, paralyzing disbelief at the military armada descending on his vacation.
