Chapter 3 - The Boardroom Execution

While I was resting in a secure recovery suite following an emergency C-section that safely delivered my healthy, beautiful daughter, Maya, the financial demolition of Julian Vance was already operating at light-speed.
To understand how a self-made tech millionaire could be wiped out in less than two hours, you have to understand who funded his rise.
Six years ago, when Julian was a desperate programmer with a failing app startup and zero capital, he had pitched his vision to a silent venture capitalist named Sterling Capital Holdings. He never met the primary investor. He only signed the multi-million-dollar funding agreement through a corporate proxy.
That proxy was my mother’s private family trust.
I had spent ten years watching him build Vance Global from the ground up, keeping my identity a secret because I wanted to know if he loved me for who I was, or if he was simply climbing a ladder built on my family's wealth.
Now, he had his answer. And so did we.
By 9:00 a.m. on Monday morning, the glass-and-steel headquarters of Vance Global in downtown Chicago was a fortress under federal siege.
Julian sat in his executive suite—having been flown back overnight under military escort—staring in horror at the computer screen on his desk. The corporate accounts, the offshore reserves, the private investment portfolios, and the deed to his luxury penthouse had all flashed a brilliant, blinding crimson:
CRITICAL ERROR: ASSET OWNERSHIP REVERTED TO STERLING HOLDINGS. ALL EXECUTIVE CREDENTIALS TERMINATED.
The heavy oak doors of his office swung open.
My father, Admiral Sterling, walked into the suite. He wasn't in uniform; he wore a sharp, tailored charcoal suit, his gray hair neatly combed, carrying a thick navy-blue leather portfolio. Behind him stood two federal prosecutors from the Department of Justice.
“Julian,” my father said, his voice echoing coldly off the high glass walls.
Julian stood up so fast his leather chair crashed backward onto the marble floor. He looked from my father’s face to the four gold stars pinned invisibly to his bearing.
“You... you’re the Sterling from the trust,” Julian choked out, his face draining of all color, his skin turning the sickly gray hue of wet plaster. “Genevieve... she’s your daughter?”
“She is,” Admiral Sterling said, placing the leather portfolio flat on the glass conference table with a heavy, definitive thud. “And you attempted to murder her and my unborn granddaughter on the open ocean.”
“It was a joke! A misunderstanding!” Julian shrieked, his voice cracking into a high, hysterical pitch as he lunged toward the desk. “Victoria told me—she said it was just a prank to toughen her up! We didn't know she was pregnant with complications!”
“The Coast Guard audio recordings and the forensic toxicology reports from your resort room tell a very different story, Julian,” one of the federal prosecutors stepped forward, sliding a stack of arrest warrants across the table. “You administered a heavy sedative in her prenatal vitamins, strapped her to a watercraft against her explicit medical consent, and recorded the assault for your mistress's amusement.”
The prosecutors pulled out a pair of heavy steel handcuffs.
May you like
“Julian Vance, you are under arrest for attempted first-degree murder, conspiracy, and federal wire fraud.”
As they clicked the cuffs tightly around his wrists, dragging him past the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the city he thought he owned, Julian looked out at the skyline with empty, ruined eyes. The empire he had claimed as his own was gone in a single heartbeat.
