Chapter 5 - An Unwritten Ledger

Six months later.

The morning sun rose over the rolling green hills of our family estate in coastal Maine, painting the sky in brilliant shades of gold, amber, and dusty apricot. The air was clean, smelling of ocean salt, pine trees, and damp earth.

I sat in a comfortable rocking chair on the wide veranda of the main house, holding my daughter Maya close to my chest as she drifted off to sleep. Her world was quiet, secure, and entirely protected from the monsters of the past.

My tactical watch—the same watch I had used to summon the Coast Guard fleet—lay on the wooden table beside my rocking chair.

Suddenly, the screen of the watch flashed with a soft, persistent blue pulse.

I tapped the glass, expecting to see a routine security report from my father's military network.

Instead, the screen displayed an encrypted data packet routed through an offshore server based in Zurich, Switzerland.

WARNING: ENCRYPTED OVERRIDE DETECTED ON STERLING TRUST BACKUP DB-7.

My fingers went entirely cold against the glass screen. I swiped open the live tracking log. The IP address used for the override was routed through a secure financial node in Zurich. But it wasn't the location that made my breath catch in my throat. It was the specific file they were trying to download.

It was the Vanguard Maritime dossier—the exact corporate records linked to the offshore shell company Julian had used to funnel funds during his Cabo venture.

A new text message appeared on the screen from an unlisted international number with a Swiss country code:

“Genevieve Sterling, you dismantled Julian’s local company, but you missed the primary ledger. The twenty million dollars Julian used to fund his startup wasn't venture capital. It was an advance payment owed to the Zurich Maritime Syndicate under your grandfather's original 1999 shipping agreement. Julian was only our local proxy. We are coming to collect the remaining balance on the trust.”

The line went dead, and the screen flickered into static.

I slowly lowered my wrist, looking out at the beautiful, quiet expanse of the Atlantic ocean. The horizon was still and bright, but in the distance, a sleek, dark black sedan slowly turned into the private gravel lane leading to our estate.

My father stepped out onto the veranda from the French doors, noticing the sudden shift in my posture. He didn't speak; he simply walked over to the table, glanced at the flashing screen of the tactical watch, and then rested his hand calmly on his service sidearm.

The local war was over. Julian Vance was behind bars.

But as the dark sedan sat silent at the gate, I realized that the true battle for my family's legacy was only just beginning.
