Chapter 4 - Shadows Pulling the Strings

The screen of her private phone kept flashing.
Gabriel Reyes stepped forward, his posture rigid. "Madam President, don't answer. Give me a few minutes with cybersecurity, and we can trace the signal," he whispered.
She raised a hand, hushing him. Sliding her finger across the screen, she brought the phone to her ear. She didn't say a word. She waited.
On the other end, heavy, deliberate breathing filled the line, followed by a digitally altered, icy voice.
"Congratulations on reclaiming your toy, Valeria," the voice sneered. "Your father was clever to build that trust, but he made one fatal mistake: believing that the money of broke losers like your ex-husband would be enough to stop us."
Valeria gritted her teeth, keeping her tone sharp as steel. "Who are you? My forensic auditors are already tracing every single cent that touched my ex-husband's accounts. If you think you can hide behind a voice modulator, you're dead wrong."
A metallic laugh echoed in her ear. "Search all you want. What you find in that offshore subsidiary is just the tip of the iceberg. You have seven days before the annual shareholder meeting. If you haven't resigned by then, the secret your father died for will be exposed to the world. Enjoy the corner office while you can."
The line went dead. Valeria lowered her phone slowly.

"Gabriel," she said, turning around. "Forget the divorce proceedings for a moment. The prosecutor has that covered. I need you to open the archived files on the Swiss subsidiary from three years ago. Right before my father fell ill, he blocked a multi-million-dollar investment. That's where this started."
Gabriel nodded grimly. "I'll get on it immediately. But remember, Valeria—if we poke around that subsidiary, we’re poking the real sharks."
