Chapter 1: The Shatter Point

The silence in the penthouse was no longer luxurious; it was suffocating. The golden hour sun, which only moments ago had bathed the room in a warm, cinematic glow, now felt harsh, exposing every line of panic on Trev’s face. The polaroids lay scattered across the pristine marble kitchen island like a spilled deck of tarot cards, each one dealing a worse fate than the last. Images of him. Images of Hannah. Stolen kisses in dimly lit alcoves. Tangled limbs in hotel rooms they thought were ghosts to the world.

"Hannah..." Trev started, his voice a dry rasp. He reached a hand out, his fingers trembling slightly.

Hannah recoiled, taking a sharp step backward. Her breathing was erratic, her chest heaving beneath her silk slip dress. Tears streamed down her face, ruining her meticulously applied makeup, but she didn’t care. Her eyes were locked on the official document resting beneath the photos.

"Don't," she whispered, her voice cracking. "Don't touch me, Trev. Don't you dare."

"Listen to me, please. I don't understand how this—"

"She knew!" Hannah’s voice erupted, a jagged scream that echoed off the floor-to-ceiling windows. "All this time, Trev! Every time we sneaked away, every time you told me she suspected nothing, every time you looked me in the eyes and said we were safe... she knew!"

Trev dragged his hands through his hair, gripping the roots until his knuckles turned white. "What have I done?" he muttered, more to himself than to her. "God, what have I done?"

"You ruined us!" Hannah sobbed, pointing a shaking finger at the pile. "Look at them! They’re time-stamped, Trev. The one from Milan? That was six months ago. She has been watching us for half a year. Your wife has been sitting across the dining table from you, smiling, knowing you were in my bed."

"Eleanor wouldn't do this," Trev said, his voice laced with desperate denial. "She’s not... she’s not calculating like this. If she found out, she would have screamed, thrown things, divorced me publicly. She wouldn't hire a private investigator and send it to me in a neat little package."

Hannah let out a hollow, bitter laugh. "You really don't know the woman you married, do you? You think she's just going to let you walk away with the company? With half her family's fortune? This isn't a divorce petition, Trev. This is a threat."

Trev stepped closer, ignoring her earlier plea, and grabbed the official document. His eyes scanned the dense legal jargon, his face draining of color with every passing second. "It's... it's a draft," he stammered. "A draft for a corporate restructuring. She’s proposing a complete buyout of my shares. For pennies."

"And if you don't sign?" Hannah asked, her voice dropping to a terrifying whisper.

Trev slowly turned over the last polaroid. Written on the back in elegant, terrifyingly familiar cursive were three words: You have 24 hours.

May you like

Trev looked up, his eyes meeting Hannah's terrified gaze. "We need to leave," he said. "Now."

But as he turned toward the door, the digital lock on the penthouse entrance beeped, its light flashing from green to red. They were locked in. What was waiting for them on the other side?
