Chapter 7: The Blood Price

Chapter 7: The Blood Price

Hannah stared at the monitor, her breath caught in her throat. The grainy security footage showed her sister, Sarah, fumbling with her keys near her sensible sedan. It was late; Sarah had just finished her shift at the hospital.
"No, no, no," Hannah chanted, pressing her hands against the screen as if she could reach through and pull her sister to safety. "Trev, she has people watching my sister. She’s going to hurt her."
Trev’s face was a mask of cold fury. He slammed his fist against the metal server rack. "Eleanor! You vindictive bitch!" he roared into the empty room, knowing she was likely listening through the intercom system.
"Trev, you have to sign it," Hannah pleaded, grabbing the lapels of his shirt. Tears streamed down her face. "You have to sign the confession. I don't care about the money. I don't care about the company. Please, don't let her hurt Sarah."
"If I sign it, Hannah, I go to prison," Trev said, his voice agonizingly tight. "And she'll still destroy you."
"I don't care about me!" Hannah screamed, shaking him. "It's my sister! She has nothing to do with this! You promised to protect me. Protect her!"
The monitor flickered again. The video feed shrank to the corner of the screen, and a new message appeared in the center.
YOU HAVE ONE MINUTE TO UPLOAD THE DIGITALLY SIGNED CONFESSION. OR MY MEN INTRODUCE THEMSELVES TO SARAH.
A PDF document popped up on the screen. It was a full confession to corporate espionage, wire fraud, and treason, alongside a complete transfer of assets to Eleanor Klair. At the bottom was a blinking cursor, waiting for Trev's digital signature.
A smaller timer appeared beneath the document. 00:59... 00:58...
Trev stared at the screen, the weight of his entire life crashing down upon him. He had built an empire on a lie, and now the foundation had crumbled, threatening to bury an innocent woman.
"Do it, Trev," Hannah begged, sinking to her knees, sobbing uncontrollably. "Please."
Trev looked down at the woman he loved, utterly broken by his actions. He took a deep breath, the air tasting of stale dust and defeat. He reached for the keyboard.
"Okay," Trev said, his voice dead. "Okay, Eleanor. You win."
He clicked the signature box. He typed his name. He hit enter.
The document vanished. The timer vanished. The video feed of Sarah showed her safely getting into her car and driving away.
Hannah collapsed against Trev's legs, weeping in pure relief. Trev stood entirely still, staring at the blank monitor. He was a dead man walking.
Then, the speakers in the server room crackled to life. Eleanor's voice echoed, but this time, she didn't sound triumphant. She sounded furious.
"What game are you playing, Trev?" she spat.
Trev frowned, looking at the ceiling. "What are you talking about? I signed it. I gave you everything."
"You think you're clever?" Eleanor hissed. "The document you just sent me... it's a decoy. The asset transfer codes are invalid. And the confession is a forgery."
Trev looked at Hannah, who was slowly standing up, her tears suddenly gone. Her face was calm, eerily composed.
"Hannah?" Trev asked, a deep unease settling in his stomach. "What did you do?"
May you like
Hannah didn't look at him. She looked directly into the security camera mounted in the corner of the room. "The real files are secure, Eleanor," Hannah said, her voice completely devoid of fear. "And if you ever go near my sister again, I won't just release the Geneva files to the DOJ. I'll release the files on you."
What explosive secret is Hannah holding, and who has she been working for all along?
