Chapter 10: The Devil's Gambit

Chapter 10: The Devil's Gambit

The heavy steel door of the panic room remained open just enough for the muzzle of the gun to point directly at Trev’s chest. The heat from the burning penthouse was bleeding into the cool concrete space, but Trev felt completely frozen.
"Who are you?" Trev demanded, his hands raised slightly. He shifted his body, instinctively trying to shield Hannah behind him, despite everything she had done.
The man slowly lowered the gas mask from his face. He was in his late forties, with sharp features and cold, calculating eyes.
Hannah gasped from behind Trev. "Marcus?"
Trev glanced back at her. "You know him?"
"He's... he's the head of my firm," Hannah stammered, stepping out from behind Trev, her eyes wide with shock. "Marcus, what are you doing here? And why do you have a gun?"
Marcus smiled, a chilling expression that didn't reach his eyes. "Hello, Hannah. You did excellent work. You got the confession. You got the leverage on Eleanor. The board is very pleased."
"Then lower the weapon," Hannah said, trying to regain her authority. "We have the data. The police and fire departments are on their way. We need to get out of here."
"I'm afraid there's been a slight change in the objective, Hannah," Marcus said smoothly, his aim never wavering from Trev. "The board realized that having both Trev and Eleanor in prison is... messy. It tanks the stock price. It invites federal oversight into the company for years to come."
"What are you saying?" Trev asked, a terrible realization dawning on him.
"I'm saying the board prefers a tragic accident," Marcus replied. "A bitter wife locks her cheating husband and his mistress in the penthouse, overheats the servers, and they all perish in the blaze. The board sweeps in to mourn the loss, takes complete control of the company, and the DOJ investigation dies with the primary suspects."
"You're going to kill us," Hannah whispered, horrified. "You set me up. You used me to get the evidence so you could take over the company."
"Corporate restructuring is a brutal business," Marcus said unapologetically. He raised the gun, aiming it squarely at Trev’s head. "Nothing personal, Mr. Klair."
"Wait!" Trev shouted, a desperate gamble forming in his mind. "If you kill me, you don't get the Geneva slush fund."
Marcus paused, his finger hovering over the trigger. "The fund is tied to your biometric data. We already know that."
"Yes, but you don't know the secondary failsafe," Trev lied, his mind racing. "If my heart stops, a dead-man's switch activates. The funds are instantly transferred to an anonymous cryptocurrency wallet. Untraceable. You get the company, sure, but you lose three hundred million dollars in untaxed capital."
Marcus’s eyes narrowed. He looked at Hannah. "Is he bluffing?"
"I... I don't know," Hannah said, catching Trev's eye. She understood what he was doing. She played along. "I couldn't crack the deepest encryption on his personal drives. It's possible."
Marcus hesitated, lowering the gun by a fraction of an inch to consider his options.
It was all the opening Trev needed.
With a roar, Trev lunged forward, grabbing the heavy steel door of the panic room and violently yanking it inward. The massive door slammed shut with incredible force, clipping Marcus’s arm and knocking the gun from his hand as it sealed shut with a deafening CLANG.
The locking mechanism engaged automatically. They were safe inside the bunker.
Trev collapsed against the wall, sliding down to the floor, gasping for the clean, filtered air of the panic room. Hannah sank down beside him, trembling uncontrollably.
They were alive. They had the evidence. But they were locked in a steel box in the middle of a burning skyscraper, with a corporate hitman waiting right outside the door.
Trev looked at Hannah, his former lover, his betrayer, and now his only ally.
