Chapter 8: The Viper in the Nest

Trev stared at Hannah, the world tilting violently on its axis. The timid, terrified woman who had been sobbing on the floor seconds ago was gone. In her place stood someone cold, calculated, and entirely alien to him.

"Hannah?" Trev managed to croak out, stepping away from her as if she were a live wire. "What... what did you just say?"

Through the intercom, Eleanor’s voice was venomous. "You little whore. You think you can bluff me?"

"Try me," Hannah said, her eyes locked on the camera lens. "Let's talk about the Cayman accounts, Eleanor. Not Trev's. Yours. The ones you used to funnel money from your family's charity foundation into a private offshore trust."

Silence hung heavy in the air. The static on the intercom seemed to amplify the tension.

Trev’s jaw dropped. "Eleanor? Embezzling from her own charity?"

"She’s been doing it for years," Hannah said casually, finally turning to look at Trev. There was no warmth in her eyes. "Trev thought he was the master criminal in the family. He didn't realize he married a woman who was stealing millions from orphans."

"How do you know this?" Trev demanded, his mind spinning. "Who are you?"

"I am someone who was hired to audit the Klair Group from the inside," Hannah said calmly. "Did you really think we met by chance at that art gallery, Trev? I was planted there. My firm knew you had a weakness for young, naive blondes with an interest in modern art."

"Your firm?" Trev felt physically sick. Every kiss, every whispered secret, every moment of vulnerability—it was all an operation. "You're a spy."

"A corporate investigator," Hannah corrected him. "Hired by the board of directors. They suspected financial anomalies. They just didn't know if it was you or Eleanor. Turns out, it was both of you. You're both parasites."

The intercom crackled. "You have no proof," Eleanor said, but her voice lacked its earlier absolute confidence.

"I cloned your hard drive three weeks ago when I 'accidentally' spilled wine on your laptop at the gala, Eleanor," Hannah said with a cold smile. "The decryption took a while, but we cracked it yesterday. The DOJ already has a preliminary brief."

"You used me," Trev whispered, the betrayal cutting deeper than the threat of prison.

"You used yourself, Trev," Hannah retorted, her tone turning sharp. "You were willing to let my sister be threatened to save your own skin."

"I signed the paper to save her!" Trev yelled.

"You hesitated!" Hannah yelled back, dropping the cold facade for a fraction of a second. "You hesitated, Trev! And that told me everything I needed to know about who you really are."

Hannah turned back to the console, pulling a small silver flash drive from her pocket and plugging it into the server. Her fingers flew across the keyboard.

"What are you doing?" Trev asked, stepping forward.

"I'm overriding Eleanor's lockdown," Hannah said. "My team is downstairs. They're coming up."

But as she typed, the main screen flashed bright red. An alarm klaxon began to wail through the penthouse.

INITIATING PROTOCOL: SCORCHED EARTH.

"Eleanor, what did you do?" Hannah demanded, her fingers frantically typing trying to stop the process.

"If I'm going down, little spy," Eleanor's voice echoed with maniacal finality, "I'm making sure neither of you walks out of that building with my company's secrets."

Smoke began to pour from the ventilation shafts. What is Eleanor's final, desperate move, and can they escape before the penthouse becomes their tomb?
