Chapter 5: The Fractured Reflection

The silence that followed Eleanor's sign-off was heavier than before. It was the silence of a bomb waiting to detonate. The red digital timer on the screen ticked down mercilessly: 23:58... 23:57...

Hannah slowly backed away from Trev until her back hit the cold glass of the floor-to-ceiling window. She looked at him as if he were a stranger. In many ways, he was. The handsome, charming, slightly sorrowful man she had fallen in love with was a phantom. In his place stood a cornered criminal.

"Hannah," Trev started, taking a step toward her. His hands were raised in a placating gesture. "Please. I can fix this. I have lawyers. I have people who can make this go away."

"Make it go away?" Hannah echoed, her voice trembling with a mix of fury and disbelief. "You sold secrets to blacklisted companies! You committed federal crimes! How do you just 'make that go away', Trev? Do you just bribe another government official?"

"I did it to save my father's legacy!" Trev shouted, his composure finally shattering. "You don't understand the pressure! A thousand employees would have lost their jobs. My family name would have been ruined. I made a difficult choice!"

"You made a selfish choice!" Hannah fired back. "And then you dragged me into it! You let me believe you were this noble man trapped in a gilded cage. You bought me jewelry with dirty money! You turned me into an accomplice without me even knowing!"

"I never meant for you to be involved in that part of my life," Trev pleaded, his voice cracking. "I kept you separate. You were the only pure thing I had left."

"Pure?" Hannah laughed, a harsh, hysterical sound. "We were having an affair, Trev! There was nothing pure about it. But at least I thought we were just morally compromised. I didn't think I was sleeping with a felon!"

She pushed past him, marching toward the kitchen island. She grabbed the polaroids, her hands shaking so badly she dropped half of them. She stared at a picture of them laughing in Venice, paid for by an illegal offshore account. She felt sick to her stomach.

"What are you doing?" Trev asked, watching her anxiously.

"I'm finding a way out of here," Hannah said, her eyes frantically searching the kitchen. She grabbed a heavy marble rolling pin from the counter.

"Hannah, put that down. The glass is reinforced. You can't break the windows."

"Watch me," she snarled, marching toward the panoramic window overlooking the city.

"Hannah, stop!" Trev lunged, grabbing her wrist before she could swing.

She fought him, thrashing and screaming. "Let me go! I won't go to prison for you! I won't let her destroy me!"

Trev overpowered her, wrapping his arms around her and pulling her tight against his chest. She sobbed, her fight draining away, leaving only absolute terror.

"I won't let you go down for this," Trev whispered fiercely into her hair. "I swear to you, Hannah. I will take the fall. I will sign whatever she wants."

Hannah pulled back, looking up into his desperate eyes. "If you sign it, she's still going to turn you in. She said it herself. She's just giving you a head start. You'll be a fugitive."

"Then I'll run," Trev said, his jaw setting with grim determination. "But before I do, we are going to find Eleanor's insurance policy. She has the files somewhere. If we can find them and destroy them, we take away her leverage."

"How?" Hannah asked, wiping her face. "We're locked in a penthouse."

Trev looked up at a seemingly blank section of the wood-paneled wall near the bookshelf. "Because," he said slowly, "Eleanor doesn't know about the safe room. And the servers that run this building are right behind that wall."

Can Trev and Hannah hack their way out of Eleanor's digital trap, or are they walking into a deeper snare?
