Chapter 1 - The Message on Her Back

My phone rang at 11:43 p.m.

Decades in the Army had conditioned me to wake instantly whenever the phone sounded after dark. The name glowing on the screen made me sit upright before I even answered: Dr. Alan Mercer.

Alan and I had been friends for more than twenty years. He had devoted his life to saving people at St. Mary's Hospital, while I had spent mine leading soldiers across battlefields before retiring as a Colonel in the United States Army. Neither of us ever called that late unless something had gone terribly wrong.

"Richard," he said the instant I answered. "Get to St. Mary's. Right now."

I was already pulling on my jacket. "What happened?"

"It's Emily."

My heart seemed to stop. "What happened to my daughter?"

Alan hesitated for just a second. "I can't explain it over the phone. Colonel... you need to see this for yourself."

Less than ten minutes later, I pulled into the emergency entrance. Trauma Room Two was waiting. Alan stood outside, his normally steady expression replaced by something I'd never seen before—fear.

"Where's Emily?" I demanded.

Without saying a word, he pulled back the curtain. My daughter lay face down on the hospital bed, heavily sedated. The back of her gown had been carefully cut away.

At first, I assumed I was looking at deep bruises. Then years of military experience forced me to focus. Those weren't bruises. Someone had carved words into her skin—shallow, deliberate cuts, tiny beads of fresh blood still lining every letter. It was a message:

HE LIED TO YOU TOO.

I stepped closer, my knees almost giving out. Then I noticed something clenched beneath Emily's trembling fingers: a torn strip of an expensive men's dress shirt. In the corner, embroidered in navy thread, were three initials: D.C.M.

Daniel Charles Mercer. My son-in-law.

May you like

I reached toward the fabric, but Emily's eyes fluttered open. She struggled to focus on my face.

"Dad..." she whispered painfully. "...Don't let him know... I'm still alive."
