Chapter 5 - The Truth Exposed

My hand froze against the phone. "Margaret...?"
"Emily was right," Margaret’s voice wept through the speaker. "Alan lied to you about Lucas to protect me... but he didn't order Greyhaven."
"Margaret, where have you been? Who did this to Emily?!" I screamed as Ortiz sped the police cruiser up Mercer's long, winding driveway.
"I did what I had to do to keep Lucas alive," Margaret whimpered. "When Marcus Vale threatened to expose the black budget network, the command structure decided to erase everyone involved. I staged my illness and went into hiding to keep the paper trail alive. But Emily found the records. She brought the truth to light, and they found her."
The police cruiser screeched to a halt outside Mercer's stone mansion. I threw the door open, drawing my sidearm, and sprinted up the steps with Ortiz right behind me.
We burst through the heavy oak doors into the grand study.
Alan Mercer sat slumped on the floor, bleeding from a head wound. Lucas stood near the desk, holding a heavy steel lockbox. And standing near the French doors, bathed in the pale morning light, was Margaret.
Beside her stood a tall man in a dark tailored overcoat, holding a silenced pistol.
When he turned toward us, thirty years of military instinct froze in my veins.
"Hello, Richard," said former Brigadier General Marcus Vale.
"You're dead," I breathed.
"Publicly, yes. It makes managing offshore assets much simpler," Vale sneered, lowering the weapon slightly toward Margaret. "Your wife has been remarkably elusive, Colonel. But once your daughter started digging into Bright Path Learning, I knew Margaret would surface to protect her little secret."
"It was never a secret, Marcus," Margaret said, her voice turning cold as iron. She looked at me, tears streaming down her face. "Richard... I didn't stage my death to hide from Vale. I staged it to hide from you."
The room went dead silent. The rain beat heavily against the glass.
"What?" I whispered.
"Greyhaven wasn't Vale's operation," Margaret said, looking at me with a mixture of tragedy and horror. "Vale was just the fall guy. The black budget, the redirected funds, the unauthorized programs... it was created under your authority, Richard. You signed the operational orders."
"I was framed!" I shouted. "I testified against Vale!"
"You testified to save yourself," Vale interrupted with a bitter laugh. "You suffered severe trauma after the Vezna explosion, Colonel. You forgot what you authorized. Alan tried to cover your tracks by fabricating the DNA files and medical records to make it look like a rogue conspiracy, thinking he was protecting his best friend. Your wife spent four years running from the truth—and from what you would do if you ever remembered."

"No," I shook my head, my gun trembling in my grip. "No. That's a lie. I'm a soldier. I served my country!"
"You were a commander who gave orders in the dark," Margaret whispered. "And when the dark came back, you forgot you were the one who invited it in."
