Chapter 4 - Confrontation at the Mercer Estate

"Stay where you are! Don't go inside!" I ordered as Detective Ortiz signaled for backup.
"I can't wait, Colonel," Lucas said over the line. "I've spent my whole life not knowing who I am."
Before I could reply, Alan's voice echoed in the background over the phone. Calm. Unhurried. "Give me the phone, Lucas."
Alan came onto the line. "You always were quick to choose the most obvious enemy, Richard. You doubt evidence when it threatens the story you prefer."
"Let the boy go, Alan," I growled, boarding Ortiz's vehicle as we tore through the streets toward Mercer's estate. "You stole my DNA. You used my wife. Did you carve up my daughter too?"
"I never touched Emily!" Alan snapped, losing his composure for the first time. "She came to me asking questions about Greyhaven, and someone else followed her! I brought her to St. Mary's to save her from them!"
"Then who attacked her?"
"The person who really ran Greyhaven," Alan whispered into the receiver. "The person who faked their death four years ago to escape federal indictment."
A sudden crash sounded through the phone, followed by Lucas shouting.
"Lucas!" I yelled.

A new voice came over the speaker. It was a woman's voice—older, frail, yet unmistakably familiar. A voice I had listened to for thirty-two years. A voice I had buried four years ago.
"Richard..." whispered my dead wife, Margaret.
