Chapter 2 - The Shadows of Greyhaven

"Who, Emily?" I bent closer, my voice barely audible.
"He'll come back," she gasped, her breathing uneven. "The shirt was planted..."
Before I could get another word, the sedatives pulled her under again. Dr. Alan Mercer stepped in, insisting she needed rest, just as Detective Lena Ortiz arrived to investigate.
When we turned Emily's hands over, a small brass key slipped from her grip onto the sheets. Engraved on its side was the number 214.
"Where was she found?" I asked Detective Ortiz.
"An abandoned office building near the river," Ortiz replied. "It used to belong to Vale Strategic Consulting."
A cold pressure formed behind my ribs. Brigadier General Marcus Vale had been my commanding officer during an intelligence operation in Eastern Europe code-named Greyhaven. I had exposed Vale's corruption years ago, putting him in prison. He had vowed my family would learn the cost of my honor. But Vale had died eighteen months ago... or so I believed.
At three in the morning, my son-in-law, Daniel, rushed into the hospital. He claimed he had been three hours away in Portland on business. When confronted with the torn shirt, he insisted it had been stolen during a home burglary two weeks prior.
"Emily and I were investigating Greyhaven," Daniel revealed, pulling a file from his briefcase. "She found bank records among her late mother's belongings. Payments from a military contractor to a charity named Bright Path Learning, managed secretly by your late wife, Margaret. It funded the care of a child named Lucas V."

"Why would Margaret support Vale's child?" I asked, bewildered.
"Because," Daniel said softly, "Emily believed Lucas wasn't Vale's son at all."
