Chapter 3 - The Safe Deposit Box

By dawn, Detective Ortiz, Daniel, and I arrived at Union Federal Branch 214. The brass key turned smoothly in safe deposit box 214. Inside lay three bundles of letters, an old cassette recorder, a sealed military personnel file, and a photograph of a young man wearing a red medical bracelet labeled LUCAS.

I opened the personnel file. Inside was a DNA report dated twenty-one years earlier.

Subjects: Richard Hayes & Lucas V.

Probability of Paternity: 99.8%

My breath hitched. I had never been unfaithful to Margaret. Beneath the DNA report was a letter written in my late wife’s handwriting:

Richard,

If you are reading this, Emily has uncovered what I spent years trying to understand. Lucas is your son. During your final Greyhaven deployment, Alan treated you after an explosion. He collected blood and tissue samples while you were unconscious. Those samples were used in an illegal, unauthorized fertility program funded through Northlake Systems.

Alan lied to you too.

The words carved into Emily's back hadn't been written about Daniel or General Vale. They were written about my oldest friend, Dr. Alan Mercer.

Suddenly, my phone rang. The caller ID showed Emily’s number, but the voice on the other end was a young man’s.

"Colonel Hayes? My name is Lucas."

"Lucas! Where are you?" I demanded.

"I'm outside Alan Mercer's house," Lucas said, his voice trembling. "He has your wife's missing letters and the master video from the night Greyhaven ended—the one that proves who really ordered the operation."
