Chapter 2

Chapter 2: The Inheritance
The early morning mist of Beverly Hills had not yet burned off when Katherine stepped into Richard Sterling’s private study. The room was suffocating, thick with the scent of aged oak, expensive leather, and Cuban cigar smoke. On the massive wall behind the mahogany desk, oil portraits of three generations of Sterling men stared down like cold, merciless judges.
Richard Sterling sat in his high-backed leather armchair, his face etched with the lines of old age, but his eyes were as sharp as razor blades. Standing beside him was Julian. His face was still pale from the shocking embezzlement accusations regarding the Berlin office, but his gaze toward Katherine remained intensely threatening and dominant.
"Sit down, Katherine," Richard said. His voice was low, but it carried an invisible pressure that made it hard to breathe.
Katherine pulled her silk robe tighter around herself, forcing her shoulders to stay straight as she took the seat opposite the two most powerful men in the dynasty. She knew that from this moment on, every step she took in this house would be on the edge of a knife.
"Thomas has already explained the urgency of the matter to you," Richard opened, sliding a thin, leather-bound contract toward her. "The secondary encryption key that your father’s old firm still holds is the only thing that can bypass and wipe the digital footprint of those Berlin accounts before the SEC intervenes. You have exactly three days to get it from him."
"My father handed over all management and confidential archives to his new partners when he retired," Katherine said, keeping her voice remarkably level. "He no longer has legal access to that system. If I force him to retrieve it, it will leave a trail."
Julian took a sharp step forward, slamming both hands onto the desk and leaning over her with sheer malice. "That is your problem, Katherine! Do you think we brought you into this family just to be a pretty ornament? Your father received millions of dollars from Sterling subsidies to keep his failing firm afloat last year. Now, it’s time for you people to pay your debts."
"That’s enough, Julian," Richard raised a single hand, cutting his son off. He looked at Katherine with the calculating eyes of a man inspecting merchandise. "I don't like to force family members, Katherine. So, let’s consider this a trade. If you secure that key quietly, I will sign a directive transferring a 5% independent share of Sterling Realty directly into your name as an immediate inheritance. Furthermore, Julian will sign a financial agreement guaranteeing you a ten-million-dollar private trust fund that no one else can touch."
Katherine froze. Five percent of Sterling Realty was worth hundreds of millions of dollars. It was a staggering sum—a golden life jacket that could grant her total freedom from Julian’s abuse forever. But she also knew the Sterlings too well: they never gave anything away without a lethal trap attached to it.
"And if I fail?" Katherine asked, her eyes meeting Richard’s locked glare.
Julian scoffed. "Then, as my mother mentioned at breakfast, our legal team will submit a comprehensive file to the authorities showing that your father accepted bribes and falsified accounting books during the Berlin acquisition. He’s seventy years old, Katherine. Do you think he’ll survive his first three years in a federal penitentiary?"
A wave of fury crashed through Katherine’s chest. But instead of breaking her, the anger transformed into a cold, lethal strength that rippled down her spine. She looked directly at her husband—the man she had once thought was her destiny, who was now nothing more than a pathetic blackmailer. She realized that in this game, she could no longer play defense. She had to attack.
"I need three days," Katherine said coldly, picking up the contract from the desk. "But I want the terms regarding the 5% share and the trust fund signed and notarized by Thomas Vance this afternoon, before I get into the car to see my father."
Richard raised an eyebrow, a flicker of genuine respect passing through the old fox’s eyes at his daughter-in-law’s sudden resilience. "Deal. Thomas will have the paperwork ready. Don't disappoint me, Katherine."
As Katherine walked out of the study, Julian pursued her down the grand hallway lined with priceless artwork. He brutally grabbed her by the wrist, pinning her back against the cold marble wall.
"You think you're smart, don't you, Katherine?" Julian hissed through his teeth, his breath smelling faintly of the breakfast wine. "You think having money and stock means you can just walk away from me? You are my property. No matter how much cash you have, I can snap your wings whenever I want."

Katherine didn't flinch. She stared directly into Julian’s bloodshot, rage-filled eyes. "Let go of me, Julian. If you bruise my skin one more time, I won't hesitate to walk straight into the CNN headquarters instead of my father's house. Let's see how many points Sterling Realty's stock drops before the SEC even has a chance to arrest you."
Julian stunned, his grip loosening slowly. His face was a mixture of shock and unbridled fury. Katherine adjusted her silk collar, turned on her heel, and walked away, leaving him standing alone in the shadows of the corridor. She knew she had just declared war on a monster, but there was no turning back.
