Chapter 4: The Betrayal

The heavy smell of ocean salt and expensive fuel hung over the Marina del Rey harbor. Evelyn Sterling lounged on the deck of her private yacht, The Golden Sovereign, sipping a glass of iced Cristal. Her sharp blue eyes were fixed on the screen of her encrypted laptop, where a digital countdown was ticking away.

She wasn’t interested in the family’s real estate legacy; she was interested in total control. For years, she had played the role of the shallow, supportive younger sister, watching her brother Julian inherit the crown despite his reckless incompetence. But Julian’s Berlin embezzlement was the lever she had been waiting for. And now, Katherine was the perfect pawn to trip the wire.

The sound of footsteps on the wooden deck broke her concentration. It was Thomas Vance, the family attorney. He looked exhausted, his tie loosened, a stark contrast to his usual pristine, corporate appearance.

"Is everything in place, Thomas?" Evelyn asked without looking up from her screen.

"Katherine secured the secondary encryption keys from her father’s estate in Ojai," Thomas said, his voice laced with unease. "She texted me an hour ago. She’s driving back to Beverly Hills as we speak, believing that delivering the keys will secure her 5% share of the company and her freedom."

Evelyn chuckled, a dark, melodic sound. "Fools always think freedom is something they can buy with good behavior. Did she suspect anything about the accounts?"

"No. But there is a complication," Thomas hesitated, shifting his weight. "My team monitored the digital traffic on the Ojai server right before she shut it down. She didn't just copy the encryption keys, Evelyn. She accessed a highly restricted, offline archive. A file from 2018. The Helena report."

Evelyn froze. Her glass stopped halfway to her lips. The amusement vanished from her face, replaced by a cold, calculating ruthlessness. "The 2018 report? You mean she knows about Julian's little... accident with his first wife?"

"Yes. If she brings that data to the federal authorities alongside the embezzlement files, she won't just destroy Julian. She will liquidate the entire Sterling brand. Richard’s assets, your assets—everything will be seized under the RICO act."

Evelyn slammed her glass onto the table, the expensive champagne splashing over the polished teak wood. "That arrogant little bitch. She thinks she can play chess with us?" She stood up, pacing the deck, her mind racing. "Change of plans, Thomas. We don't wait for her to get to the mansion. We intercept her. If Julian finds out she has that file, he will kill her himself, and the police investigation will ruin our stock before I can short it. I want Julian blamed for the leak. I want Katherine neutralized. And I want that file."

"What do you want me to do?" Thomas asked, fear evident in his eyes.

"Call the SEC hotline anonymously," Evelyn ordered, a sinister smile creeping back onto her face. "Tell them Katherine Vance-Sterling is currently in possession of the primary offshore ledgers and is attempting to destroy evidence on behalf of Julian Sterling. Give them her exact GPS coordinates on the Pacific Coast Highway. Let the feds do our dirty work. When they arrest her, Julian will look like the mastermind who sent his wife to cover his tracks. He goes to prison, she goes to prison, and I step in as the sole savior of Sterling Realty."
