Chapter 5

Chapter 5: The Confrontation
The rain began to pour just as Katherine crossed the threshold of the Sterling mansion. She wasn't shaking anymore. The fear that had paralyzed her for three years had burned away in the basement of her father's house. In her handbag, she carried two things: the encryption key that the family desperately needed, and the digital copy of the murder investigation that would tear their lives apart.
She didn't change out of her traveling clothes. She walked straight into the grand dining room, where the entire family was waiting.
The scene was eerily similar to the breakfast from three days ago. Richard sat at the center, his face like carved granite. Julianne was sipping her tea, her demeanor regal and indifferent. Julian was pacing like a caged beast, his beige polo shirt wrinkled, sweat glistening on his forehead. Evelyn sat in the corner, her arms crossed, a look of faux concern on her face.
"Do you have it?" Julian demanded the moment he saw her, rushing forward and grabbing her by the arms. "Tell me you got the keys, Katherine! The regulators are already at the downtown office!"
Katherine looked down at his hands on her arms, then up into his frantic eyes. With a cold, deliberate strength, she wrenched herself free from his grip.
"I have it," Katherine said, her voice echoing clearly through the high-ceilinged room. She pulled the black USB drive from her purse and held it up.
Julian exhaled a breath of relief, reaching for it, but Katherine pulled it back out of his reach.
"Not so fast, Julian," she said, her eyes shifting to Richard. "Before I hand this over, I want the signed and notarized transfer of my 5% shares and the ten-million-dollar trust fund. And I want a signed divorce agreement. Irreconcilable differences. No alimony, just my freedom."
Julianne laughed, a sharp, bitter sound. "You dare negotiate with us? You are a temporary extension of this family, Katherine. You take what we give you, and you thank us for it."
"Shut up, Julianne," Katherine snapped.
The room went dead silent. No one had ever spoken to the matriarch that way. Julianne’s teacup rattled against her saucer.
"Julian," Katherine said, turning back to her husband, her voice dropping into a dangerous whisper. "Do you remember Helena?"
Julian’s face went completely white. He stepped back as if he had been struck. "What... what did you say?"
"I know what you did in 2018," Katherine said, her voice steady and lethal. "I know about the remote hack on her car brakes. I know your father paid off the investigators, and I know you married me just so your father could keep a leash on my dad. You aren't a businessman, Julian. You are a murderer."
"You lying bitch!" Julian roared, his face twisting into the same monstrous mask from three days prior. He lunged at her, his hands flying toward her throat.
But this time, Katherine didn't step back. She grabbed a heavy, crystal vase of white roses from the dining table and slammed it directly into the side of Julian’s head.
The vase shattered. Water, glass, and rose petals exploded across the marble floor. Julian groaned, stumbling backward, clutching his bleeding temple before crashing down into one of the expensive dining chairs.
"Julian!" Julianne shrieked, rising from her seat.
Richard didn't move. He stared at Katherine, his eyes narrowing. "You think you can threaten us with a ghost story from six years ago? Without proof, you are nothing but a delusional girl who assaulted her husband."
"I have the proof, Richard," Katherine said, holding up her phone. "My father kept everything. The entire original forensic file is currently uploaded to a secure cloud server. If I don't enter a safety code every six hours, it automatically forwards to the FBI, the SEC, and every major news outlet in the country."
Evelyn watched from the corner, her heart hammering against her ribs. This wasn't part of her plan. Katherine wasn't just surviving; she was winning. Evelyn glanced at her watch, wondering why the authorities hadn't arrived yet.
Suddenly, the heavy front doors of the mansion were breached with a loud crash. The sound of shouting men and heavy boots echoed through the foyer.
"Federal Agents! Nobody move!"
A dozen armed men in tactical vests with "SEC" and "FBI" emblazoned across their backs swarmed into the dining room, weapons drawn.
Julian, still bleeding from his head, raised his hands in panic. "What is the meaning of this? Do you know who I am?"
The lead agent, a stern woman with her badge pinned to her belt, walked straight past Julian and stood in front of Katherine. "Katherine Vance-Sterling? We received an anonymous tip that you are in possession of stolen corporate data and are attempting to destroy evidence of a forty-million-dollar financial fraud."
Katherine looked at the agent, then turned her head slowly to look at Evelyn. Evelyn gave her a micro-nod, a subtle smirk of triumph returning to her face. Katherine realized instantly who had set her up.
"Agent," Katherine said calmly, handing over the black USB drive. "I am not destroying evidence. I am turning it over. This drive contains the secondary encryption keys to the Berlin accounts. But more importantly..." She pulled a second, smaller drive from her inner pocket. "...this contains the evidence of the forty-million-dollar embezzlement orchestrated by Julian Sterling, the obstruction of justice by Richard Sterling, and..." She paused, staring directly into Evelyn’s eyes. "...the offshore routing accounts managed by Evelyn Sterling that facilitated the entire fraud."
Evelyn’s smirk vanished instantly. "What? That’s a lie! I have nothing to do with this!"
"Search her laptop, Agent," Katherine said smoothly. "She’s been shorting the company stock from an encrypted IP address on her yacht all morning. She set this entire raid up to eliminate her brother and take over the company."
The lead agent barked orders to her team. "Secure the laptops. Arrest Julian Sterling for financial fraud and embezzlement. Detain Richard and Evelyn Sterling for questioning regarding corporate conspiracy."
As the agents moved in, cuffing a screaming Julian and a hysterical Evelyn, Richard Sterling remained seated. He looked at Katherine, his empire crumbling around him, and for the first time, he looked old.

"You ruined us," Richard whispered.
"No," Katherine replied, looking down at him with absolute disdain. "You ruined yourselves. I just turned on the lights."
