Chapter 6: The Aftermath
The fallout was immediate and catastrophic for the Sterling dynasty.
Within forty-eight hours, the headlines of the Wall Street Journal and The New York Times were plastered with the faces of the Beverly Hills elite in handcuffs. The stock of Sterling Realty plummeted by 70% in a single trading session, wiping out billions in family wealth. Julian was held without bail, his legal team scrambling as the murder investigation into Helena’s death was officially reopened by the LAPD. Richard was placed under house arrest due to his health, while Evelyn’s assets were frozen as federal prosecutors untangled her web of short-selling schemes.
Katherine sat in a quiet, minimalist office in downtown Los Angeles, far away from the chaos. Across from her sat Thomas Vance. The attorney looked broken, knowing his own career was likely over for his complicity.
"The federal prosecutors have granted you and your father full immunity," Thomas said, sliding a thick stack of papers across the desk. "Your cooperation and the delivery of the encryption keys saved the government months of investigation. You’re clean, Katherine."
"And the 5% share?" Katherine asked.
"Because the contract was signed and notarized before the federal freeze, and because it was structured as an independent inheritance trust, it remains legally yours," Thomas explained. "Even with the stock crash, those assets are tied to tangible real estate holdings in Manhattan. It’s worth roughly thirty million dollars. You are an independently wealthy woman."
Katherine looked out the window at the Los Angeles skyline. She didn't feel triumphant. She just felt tired. The golden cage was gone, but the bruises on her soul would take time to heal.
