Chapter 1 - THE BOILING POT

Every day he not only beat me but also poured boiling water on me, roaring, "I'll boil your belly until a son comes out!"
The steam rose from the kettle, carrying the metallic scent of rust and scalding heat. I shrank against the kitchen tiles, my hands pressed tightly over my belly, shielding the tiny, fragile life that had taken root inside me.
"Please, Luke, no!" I begged, my voice raw from screaming. "The doctor said another burn will cause a miscarriage! Please!"
"A daughter?" he sneered, his face twisted into an unnatural mask of rage. "You think I want another useless girl? You've failed me three times, Caroline! I will burn the weakness out of you!"
He tipped the kettle.
The agony was instantaneous, a blinding, white-hot tear through my flesh. I screamed until my throat bled, collapsing onto the damp linoleum as the scalding liquid soaked through my dress. Luke stood over me, watching with cold, detached eyes, nudging my writhing body with the toe of his leather shoe.
"Get up and clean the kitchen," he said calmly, placing the kettle back on the stove. "We have dinner with Judge Vale tonight. Look presentable."
He left the room, his footsteps heavy and measured.
I lay there for a long time, listening to the drip of water from the counter. But as the excruciating pain pulsed through my skin, a quiet, icy clarity replaced the terror. He thought he was breaking me. He thought the pain would make me compliant.
He didn't know that behind the loose floorboard in the hall closet, I had been documenting every burn, every bruise, every hospital visit for six months.

I pulled myself up, gripping the edge of the sink, staring at my reflection in the dark windowpane. My skin was ruined, but my mind was sharper than ever.
"Tonight," I whispered to the empty room, touching my abdomen. "Tonight, the water boils for you."
