Chapter 4 - THE SON HE NEVER WANTED FOUND

Mara Bell arrived under police protection just after midnight. She was not as similar to me as the photograph suggested. Without my coat, my ring, and the carefully styled hair, she looked older, thinner, and exhausted. A scar crossed the left side of her neck.

Beside her stood a boy of about ten, clutching a worn blue backpack against his chest. He had Luke’s eyes—the same pale gray, the same unsettling stillness when afraid. But when he looked at me, I saw no cruelty, only terror.

Mara stopped at the foot of my bed. “I’m sorry about the photograph.”

“Why were you wearing my clothes?”

“To make Luke believe I had entered your house.”

Anna stepped between us. “Explain everything.”

Mara looked at Daniel, then at Detective Reed. “My name is not Mara Bell.” She removed a necklace from beneath her blouse. A silver wedding band hung from the chain. “My name is Elena Hayes.”

The name matched one of the women in Luke’s locked cabinet—the woman declared dead nine years earlier. Luke’s first wife.

“He’s my son,” Elena said. “And Luke’s.”

My hands turned cold. “You were married to him?”

“For three years. The same thing happened to me. He didn't want a son; he wanted control. Pregnancy gave him an excuse to punish us because it made us vulnerable.”

One night, Luke drove Elena’s car into a river, expecting her body to be found inside. But she escaped before the vehicle sank. For nine years, she lived under another name.

“Why come back?” Anna asked.

Elena looked at me. “Because I saw your wedding announcement. I recognized him immediately. I began following his business dealings, collecting evidence... The second woman from the cabinet, Rachel Wynn, didn't die in an accident. Luke killed her after she discovered he was stealing money.”

Detective Reed placed the photograph on the table. “Why write that Caroline would not survive tonight?”

“I didn’t. Luke did,” Elena explained. “The note on the back was a plan.”

Daniel had remained silent until then. He reached into his backpack and removed a small red notebook. “My father knew you were pregnant.”

The room became completely still. I stared at him. “What?”

Daniel handed over the notebook. “He wrote everything down.”

Luke had kept records of my pregnancies: dates, medical appointments, medications, episodes of violence, and even predictions about how much force would be required to cause a loss without leaving obvious evidence.

On the final page was an entry dated six weeks earlier: Caroline suspects nothing. Fourth pregnancy confirmed. Do not allow completion.

My breath disappeared. “No,” I whispered. “The hospital tested me.”

The doctor looked troubled. “The initial blood work showed unusual hormone levels, but we attributed them to trauma. I’ll order another test and an ultrasound immediately.”

Luke had known I was pregnant before I did. He had poured boiling water over me to end it.

The doctor brought the ultrasound machine into the room and moved the probe gently across my abdomen. We watched the dark screen. For several seconds, there was nothing.

Then the doctor froze.

She increased the volume. A faint rhythm filled the room. Fast. Fragile. Alive.

My baby had survived.

Tears flooded my eyes. But beneath the joy, fear lingered.

Suddenly, every light in the room went out. The heartbeat vanished into silence. Emergency lights flashed red. Detective Reed drew his weapon as his radio erupted with warnings.

Someone had shut down power to the entire floor.

A shadow appeared behind the glass door. Luke stepped into the room wearing a stolen hospital uniform. In one hand, he held a gun. In the other, he held the emergency power switch controlling the machines keeping me stable.

He smiled at the monitor. “So,” he whispered, “there really is another one.”
