Chapter 5 - THE NIGHT THE MONSTER LOST CONTROL

Luke locked the door behind him.
Detective Reed raised his weapon. “Drop the gun.”
Luke pointed his own weapon at the oxygen line beside my bed. “One bullet,” he said, “and this room becomes a grave.”
No one moved. The red emergency light passed over his face in slow pulses.
Daniel stood behind Elena. Luke noticed him, and for the first time, genuine shock broke through his expression. “You brought him here.”
Elena stepped in front of the boy. “You will never touch him again.”
Luke laughed softly. “He isn’t mine.”
Elena’s voice hardened. “You had three paternity tests.”
“They were wrong.”
“No,” I said, sitting up as much as I could. “You were.”
Luke looked at me, the hatred in his eyes familiar, but it no longer had the same power over me. “You found my notebook,” he sneered.
Judge Vale stepped forward, holding a digital recorder. “You targeted Caroline because of me.”
“You still think everything is about you,” Luke spat.
“Your father forced her mother to disappear,” Vale countered. “And frightened men confess when they believe they are in control.”
Luke’s eyes narrowed as he realized the recorder was running, transmitting his words to officers outside. He grabbed the emergency switch. “If I release this, her medication stops. Her oxygen stops.”
“Luke,” I called out, making my voice sound weak and compliant, the way he liked it. “I don't want the baby to die. Tell them to give you the phone.”
Detective Reed held up the evidence bag. “You can have it.”
Luke looked away for half a second. That was all it took.
Daniel reached beneath the hospital bed and pulled the emergency wall alarm. A deafening siren exploded through the room.
Luke fired blindly into the ceiling. Detective Reed lunged. Judge Vale slammed into Luke’s shoulder while Anna covered my body with hers.
The gun slid across the floor, landing right beside my bed. Luke struck the detective and reached for it, his hand stretching onto my blanket.
I grabbed the heavy monitoring cable from the wall and wrapped it around his wrist, pulling with everything left inside me. It delayed him for just one second—and that was all Detective Reed needed to tackle him face-down onto the floor.
Officers burst through the door, swarming the room. Luke screamed as they cuffed him. “Caroline! You need me!”

I looked down at him coldly. “No. I survived you.”
The doctor restored power, and after three agonizing seconds, the tiny heartbeat returned—fast, defiant, alive.
