Chapter 2 - THE AUDIT AND THE AUDIENCE

The dinner at the country club was pristine. Crystal chandeliers cast soft light over white tablecloths, obscuring the horrific reality concealed beneath my silk gown. Heavy foundation covered the bruises on my jaw; long sleeves hid the bandages wrapping my arms.
Luke held my hand, his grip just tight enough to serve as a constant warning.
"Judge Vale," Luke said, flashing his charismatic, million-dollar smile. "Thank you for joining us. Apex Development is honored by your continued support."
Judge Vale, a stern man with silver hair and piercing eyes, nodded politely. "Your wife looks pale, Luke. Is she feeling well?"
"Just early pregnancy fatigue, Judge," Luke lied smoothly, squeezing my fingers until my knuckles turned white. "Caroline is a bit fragile these days."
"I am quite well, Judge," I said, my voice steady. "In fact, I've spent the afternoon reviewing the foundation's charitable accounts."
Luke’s smile stiffened slightly. "Caroline loves her volunteer work."
"It's more than volunteer work," I continued, looking directly into Judge Vale's eyes. "I noticed some unusual transfers—specifically regarding the construction grants for the new regional courthouse."
The atmosphere at the table shifted instantly. Judge Vale leaned forward, his judicial instincts sharp. "Unusual how, Mrs. Hayes?"
"Caroline," Luke interrupted, his tone dangerously soft, a silent threat vibrating beneath his words. "You must be confused. You know how the medication makes you forgetful."
"I have the bank ledgers right here in my purse," I said, reaching down.
Before I could unzip the bag, Luke's hand clamped down on my wrist like a steel trap. "Excuse us for a moment, Judge. My wife needs some air."
He dragged me toward the private corridor leading to the service entrance. The moment the heavy oak doors shut behind us, his composure vanished. He slammed me against the wall, his hand crushing my throat.
"You arrogant bitch," he hissed, his eyes wild. "You think you can ruin me in front of Vale? I made you! I own you!"
"The audit... is already... sent," I choked out, clawing at his fingers.

He raised his fist, his face contorted in pure malice. "You never learned when to keep your mouth shut."
He struck me once. Then twice. My head cracked against the exposed brick wall, and as the dark world spun away, I felt the cold splash of water again—this time from a broken pipe above us—before everything went pitch black.
