Chapter 6 - THE FATHER WHO DIED TWICE

An hour after Luke was dragged away, Detective Reed returned with shocking news. In Luke's locked garage cabinet, investigators had found a sealed letter written by my mother shortly before her death.
Judge Vale handed it to me with trembling hands. I read her familiar script:
My darling Caroline, if you are reading this, Edmund Hayes or his son has found you. Judge Vale is not your father. He is the man I needed them to believe was your father. Your real father is someone they could never afford to discover.
Beneath the letter was a photograph of my mother beside a young man in a military uniform.
“His name was Thomas Mercer,” Detective Reed explained. “To the world, he died twenty-seven years ago. In reality, he was an undercover investigator gathering evidence against Edmund Hayes. He was placed in witness protection.”
Before I could process the words, a tall man with white hair and broad shoulders stepped into the doorway. He held the exact same photograph.
Thomas Mercer looked at me with tears in his eyes. “I have no right to ask you to forgive me. I kept my distance to keep you safe... until I realized Luke had found you.”
Federal agents entered behind him, carrying boxes of seized documents. The conspiracy reached deep into local government, exposing a network of fraud, bribery, and violence masterminded by the Hayes family.
The trial would destroy dozens of powerful careers. But as the investigation wrapped up, a new threat emerged.
A small package arrived at my hospital room. Inside was my mother’s old music box. When opened, a hidden recording played Luke’s whispered voice: “You think prison can hold me?”
Then a second voice spoke—a woman's. “Caroline, your husband was never the leader. He was the distraction.”
Anna gasped. The voice belonged to Dr. Evelyn Shaw—the very doctor who had treated my injuries, documented my abuse, and confirmed my high-risk pregnancy.
She was gone. Her office was empty, her medical license revealed to be stolen from a dead woman.

Elena stared at the music box in horror. “I know her... She delivered Daniel.”
Dr. Shaw had been present during every one of my pregnancies.
