Chapter 7 - THE DOCTOR WHO COLLECTED BROKEN WOMEN

Dr. Evelyn Shaw was arrested at the airport twelve hours later, carrying forged passports, cash, and a list of seventeen women.
Under interrogation, she revealed a horrifying truth: she operated an illegal fertility network, stealing embryos from vulnerable women and selling them to wealthy clients.
“Some of the babies Luke believed he made you lose didn't die,” the federal agent told me gently. “Dr. Shaw secretly removed them during emergency procedures. She told Luke they were gone, then sold them.”
My heart stopped. “How many?”
“Three. Your first three pregnancies.”
The room spun. Three children I had mourned for years were alive.
Through coded adoption records, investigators tracked them down. Two had been adopted by loving families in Oregon and Vermont. But the third...
The agent looked at Elena. “The third child was never placed. His records identify him as Daniel Hayes.”
Silence swallowed the room.
Daniel was not Luke and Elena’s biological son. He was mine. Elena had raised him after Dr. Shaw gave the baby to her, telling her it was hers.
Elena wept freely. “He’s yours, Caroline.”
I walked into the adjoining room where the ten-year-old boy was drawing. I sat beside him and explained the truth as gently as possible.
“Do I have to choose between mothers?” he asked softly, tears in his eyes.

Elena and I answered together: “No.”
Months passed. The trial concluded with Luke receiving multiple life sentences without parole. Dr. Shaw was convicted, and through careful, compassionate arrangements, I was introduced to my other two sons, Benjamin and Samuel. Their adoptive parents welcomed me not as a threat, but as part of an expanded family.
