Chapter 1: The Contraction

I kept a twenty-million-dollar inheritance secret from my husband while I was deployed.
Then, while I was in labor, he forced me out of our home and called me “dead weight.”
He even walked into my hospital room with his new woman, proudly displaying her wedding ring because he believed he had won.
He had no idea he had just made the costliest mistake of his life.
My name is Anna Whitmore. The day my marriage ended was also the day my husband finally learned who I actually was.
A sudden contraction nearly dropped me to the kitchen floor. I gripped the counter hard enough to whiten my knuckles and forced air into my lungs.
“Mark,” I managed. “It’s starting. The doctor said to come in as soon as labor begins.”
He did not turn from his phone.
“I’m busy.”
A second contraction folded me forward. Only then did he look at me. His expression was flat, almost bored.
“I’m finished carrying you,” he said. “You’re nothing except dead weight.”
He yanked my packed hospital bag from the closet and threw it across the room. Contents scattered over the tile.
“Get out.”
May you like
My legs shook so badly I could barely stand. “I can’t even bend down.”
He watched me without moving. “That isn’t my problem.”
