Chapter 8: The Command

The new classified command came with heavier responsibilities and a clearer sense of purpose. I worked from a secure facility when Samuel was small, arranging care with a level of precision I had once reserved for operational planning. The twenty million dollars remained in the trust, professionally managed, untouched except for the modest distributions required for Samuel’s care and our household.
I did not live like a woman who had suddenly become wealthy. I lived like a woman who had finally stopped pretending to be less than she was.
Mark attempted contact twice through intermediaries. Both times the message was the same: he had not understood, he had made mistakes, he wanted to discuss the child. My attorney answered for me. There was nothing to discuss until the court said otherwise, and the court had already spoken.
