Chapter 9: The Woman in the Mirror

Months later I stood in front of the bathroom mirror holding Samuel against my shoulder and studied the face looking back. The exhaustion was real. The residual anger was real. But beneath both was a steadiness I had not felt since the early months of the pregnancy, when I still believed that silence and patience would be enough to hold a family together.
I had kept a twenty-million-dollar secret because the law required it.
I had endured Mark’s growing contempt because I thought the baby deserved two parents under one roof.
I had left my own house in labor because he had given me no alternative.
